The Water Supplies Department said the pipe supplied salt water for toilet flushing and that the interruption affected Tin Yuet Estate and part of Tin Chung Court.
The department shut the valve, stopping the flow, and arranged repairs. Pedestrians had to detour around the footbridge, while road traffic was unaffected.
It estimated that salt-water supply would be restored by 7.30am on October 18.
