Staff at Sing Tao News Corporation Limited’s building in Tseung Kwan O opened a letter containing unidentified white powder on 28 September and reported it to police. The letter had reportedly arrived at the building on 25 September.
Police sent the explosives-disposal unit and criminal-investigation officers to the scene, seized the letter and classified the case as criminal intimidation. Officers are pursuing the sender.
The letter reportedly used threatening language, referred to dissatisfaction that a complaint about a board-game shop had not been published, and threatened to take action to “uphold justice”.
Sing Tao News Corporation Limited condemned threats to press freedom and staff safety. It said its editorial department would continue its work without yielding to threats.
