Police received reports of at least four hikers who had suspected heatstroke or were otherwise unwell within about an hour around midday on October 17, the first day of the Chung Yeung holiday. The incidents were reported in Tuen Mun, Wong Tai Sin, Lantau and Yuen Long.
At about 11.30am, one of two men hiking in Tuen Mun was suspected of having heatstroke or was otherwise unwell. The man, in his 50s, did not need to be taken to hospital.
At 12.06pm, a man hiking on Lion Rock with his wife and three children developed chest discomfort. Rescue personnel treated him and his condition stabilised; he declined hospital transport.
A woman suspected of heatstroke while hiking on Lantau Peak was rescued by the Government Flying Service and taken to hospital at 12.22pm. About eight minutes later, a man aged around 60 became unwell while hiking on a mountain in Yuen Long. Other hikers called for help, and he was taken conscious to Pok Oi Hospital.
HK01's first-aid advice is to move someone affected by heat illness out of direct sun and keep the area ventilated. For someone who is unconscious, it advises splashing water over the body to lower their temperature; a conscious person can drink water. If available, ice packs can be placed under the arms or on the inner thighs.
