Police and firefighters were searching near Yau Tong’s Devil’s Peak and Ngau Kwu Shan on the morning of August 15 after reports that a man had shouted for help. No person had been found by the time of reporting, and the search was continuing.
Police and firefighters received two reports: one at about 8.30am and another at 8.38am. A resident in Kwong Tin Estate, Lam Tin, said they heard someone shouting for help while in their flat for nearly an hour.
After going to the resident’s flat, police said they heard a man shouting “Help” from around the hillside of Ngau Kwu Shan. The identity of the reported caller and the precise source of the cries had not been established.
Police formed three search teams, approaching from O King Road, Wilson Trail Section 3 and the Lam Tin hiking trail. Firefighters also took part in the ground search.
A drone equipped with thermal detection equipment was used during the operation. The Government Flying Service also sent a helicopter to assist with the search from the air.
A hiker at the scene claimed that a man often shouts on Ngau Kwu Shan between 8am and 9am, but the account had not been independently verified. It remained unclear whether the reported cries came from someone needing rescue, who, if anyone, made them, or exactly where they came from. The search continued as of the report.
