The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data has opened a compliance check on 24/7 FITNESS after hidden pinhole cameras were found in the changing-room area of its Lik Yuen Street branch in Sha Tin.

Announcing the review on October 5, the watchdog said it had asked the gym chain for further information about the security measures introduced after the incident. It will examine whether those measures are sufficient to prevent similar incidents.

Three pinhole cameras were discovered at the branch on September 25. The cameras were concealed in the ceilings of three changing rooms, raising concerns among members about their privacy.

Police arrested a 34-year-old male member in connection with the incident. He was charged with voyeurism and appeared at Sha Tin Magistrates' Court. 24/7 FITNESS said it had suspended his membership and provided information requested by police.
