Qatar Airways Cargo formally opened a regional office in Hong Kong on August 19, 2026, and signed a cooperation memorandum of understanding with Airport Authority Hong Kong on the same day. One report said the carrier had moved its regional headquarters to Hong Kong on August 18, while other reports described the August 19 event as the office’s opening or establishment.
The agreement is intended to strengthen air connectivity and aviation development by increasing cargo flight frequencies and developing additional routes through Hong Kong. It is also expected to help attract more cargo throughput, but the reports do not specify the routes, schedules or implementation timetable.
The reported scope of the cooperation also includes operational excellence, service quality, sustainable development and the development of aviation professionals through courses offered by the Hong Kong International Aviation Academy.
Qatar Airways Cargo operates about 56 cargo flights a week from Hong Kong to destinations around the world, according to reports. The carrier uses both freighter capacity and passenger-aircraft belly-hold capacity, but it is unclear whether the weekly figure covers both types of service.
Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan said the regional office reflected Qatar Airways Cargo’s confidence in Hong Kong as an international aviation hub and described the partnership as strategically significant.
Airport Authority chief executive Vivian Cheung said the regional air-cargo market was highly competitive. She said the authority would continue working with airlines to strengthen Hong Kong’s connectivity and competitiveness.
The cooperation could help Hong Kong improve links with markets that have development potential or lack direct or sufficient air services. South America was cited as a possible area for future connectivity, but no destinations have been confirmed under the agreement.
Details of any additional frequencies and routes remain pending. A local airline was expected to announce details on August 20, 2026, of a Hong Kong–Almaty service, but the reports do not identify the carrier or establish that the service has begun.
