The Hong Kong Observatory issued a Red Rainstorm Warning at 5:05 a.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026, prompting the suspension of classes at all AM schools and whole-day schools for the day.
RTHK reported that PM-school classes would proceed as usual if the Observatory downgraded the warning to Amber or cancelled all rainstorm warning signals by 10:30 a.m., unless otherwise advised.
Heavier rain and occasional lightning were reported in Yau Ma Tei during the early morning, according to i-CABLE. The broadcaster said the Red Rainstorm Warning means widespread areas of Hong Kong had recorded, or were expected to receive, more than 50 millimetres of rain per hour, and that the rain could continue.
The Drainage Services Department asked members of the public to report street flooding. The Labour Department also said employers should make work arrangements for employees as soon as possible.
The available reports do not confirm whether the warning was later downgraded or cancelled, or whether PM-school classes ultimately proceeded as usual.
