A 55-year-old man was found unconscious after collapsing during a National Day race at the Main Dam of Plover Cove Reservoir in Tai Mei Tuk at about 9am on October 1.

Event staff reported the incident and rescue personnel attended before the runner was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Tai Po for treatment. Police were investigating the cause of the collapse.

The race included 4-kilometre and 10-kilometre events and was held after the Hong Kong Observatory issued a hot-weather warning at 6.45am. A visually impaired runner also felt unwell after finishing, according to an on-site account, but recovered after resting and did not require hospital treatment.

The Hong Kong Observatory advised people taking part in outdoor activities to drink more water and avoid overexertion. Anyone who feels unwell should rest in a cool place; dizziness, headache, nausea, shortness of breath or confusion should prompt immediate help and medical attention.
