A saltwater pipe burst near Kai Tin Shopping Centre in Lam Tin at about 6pm on 6 September 2026, sending muddy water mixed with sand and stones down a slope and flooding parts of nearby roads and pavements.
The flow reached Kai Tin Road, affecting part of the carriageway and pedestrian routes. Vehicles slowed down and pedestrians had to take alternative routes around the flooded area.
Reports also described subsidence at the scene. Ming Pao reported a hole about half a metre deep, with sand and stones scattered across the road. Police attended to maintain order, and one report said officers cordoned off the area to keep residents away.
Water Supplies Department staff shut the water main and started repair work that evening. The department said the pipe was 200 millimetres in diameter, while another report described it as an eight-inch saltwater pipe.
The department said water-supply arrangements meant users' toilet-flushing water was not affected. Repair work was under way at the latest reported stage.
