A multi-agency search was under way after an unattended taxi was found stopped in the slow lane of the Tsing Ma Bridge towards the airport at about midnight, with its engine still running. Bridge or control-area staff found no one inside the vehicle.
Reports said CCTV footage showed a male driver stopping the taxi and leaving it. Authorities suspected that he then fell from the bridge into the sea, although this had not been confirmed.
Police, the Fire Services Department, the Government Flying Service and the Marine Department joined the operation. Vessels and an aircraft were used to search around and beneath the bridge.
Ming Pao reported that the missing person had not been found when its report was published and that the search was continuing.
