A 13-year-old boy with severe liver failure is in a serious condition at Queen Mary Hospital and urgently needs a liver transplant, the Hospital Authority said. He continues to have hyperammonaemia and cholangitis, among other complications.

He is currently first on the O-positive liver-transplant waiting list. The authority said it was looking locally for a suitable liver and had prepared to seek assistance through the Hong Kong government.

The possible cross-border route is conditional: if a person in mainland China who had consented to donate organs dies and has no suitable recipient locally, an organ could be coordinated for donation to Hong Kong for matching and transplant.

The Hospital Authority appealed to the public to consider donating the organs of deceased relatives. If a suitable liver is found, it said it would apply promptly to the regulator under the relevant transplant rules before arranging surgery.
