Police and fire-services personnel raided a suspected illegal fuel station on Ma Sik Road, Sheung Shui, on October 6, seizing about 2,200 litres of diesel estimated to be worth HK$83,000. They also found a large quantity of fuel-transfer tools.
Police said the station was close to residential buildings and had no dedicated fire-safety installations or equipment. A fire at the site could pose a serious threat to nearby residents and buildings.
Police stopped a 70-year-old man with a triad background on suspicion of operating the station. He is due to be prosecuted for alleged breaches of fire-safety and dangerous-goods laws. The Hong Kong Fire Services Department removed the diesel and plans to apply to the court for its forfeiture.
Members of the public can report suspected illegal fuel-transfer activity to the Hong Kong Fire Services Department's 24-hour hotline on 5577 9666.
