A male swimmer reportedly got into difficulty about 50 metres offshore at Cheung Chau’s Tung Wan Beach on Tuesday the 11th and called for help, according to a report by Sing Tao Headline.
Six lifeguards immediately went to assist him and reportedly rescued him in less than 10 seconds. Another swimmer at the beach is also reported to have raised the alarm and held on to the man before the lifeguards arrived.
The report said there were more than 100 swimmers at the beach at the time. It did not specify the identities of the swimmer, the assisting member of the public or the lifeguards.
A guest at the Warwick Hotel filmed the rescue from an elevated position. The video, which lasts about two minutes and 22 seconds, later circulated online.
Online commenters praised the lifeguards’ swimming speed after the footage spread. Their comments were a reaction to the video and do not provide an independent assessment of the rescue.
The report did not say what condition the swimmer was in after he was rescued or whether he needed hospital treatment. It also did not identify when or by whom the video was first uploaded.
