Visitors to the Sai Kung site around Ham Tin Public Toilet now have a new smart eco-friendly toilet beside the existing facility, with additional cubicles and washing facilities during the National Day Golden Week holiday.
The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department said it would also deploy extra staff and strengthen cleaning at the existing public toilet throughout the holiday period, when the popular hiking and camping area attracts large numbers of visitors.
The existing toilet had previously been reported in poor condition during periods of heavy visitation. HK01 reported that a washbasin was suspected of being blocked by food residue and mud, while excrement was left inside and rubbish gathered outside.
Department staff visited the site on 4 October to promote proper use of the facilities and spoke to visitors and local hikers. The department said those interviewed were satisfied with the cleanliness of Ham Tin Public Toilet and found the new facility convenient.
