St. Joseph’s Primary School’s long-delayed redevelopment has received internal approval to move forward, but the project still needs a funding application, tendering and approval by the Legislative Council before construction can begin.
The Education Bureau said the government plans to submit the funding application as early as 2027. The school expects demolition and construction to start around the end of that year if the new-school design is completed and the tendering and funding processes proceed as planned. The school’s principal said in a letter to stakeholders that the design was nearing completion.
The school said the project began in April 2023 and that construction was originally due to begin in 2025, with completion scheduled for 2028. Its funding application was held back for two consecutive years as other infrastructure projects took priority.
During the redevelopment, the school has proposed using the former Lung Cheung Government Secondary School campus in Wong Tai Sin as a temporary site. The Education Bureau has agreed to the proposal in principle, but said the dates for starting and ending its use will depend on funding arrangements, the overall redevelopment plan and construction progress.
Building plans approved in 2024 show a nine-storey replacement school with 30 classrooms, a visual arts room, a rooftop football pitch and outdoor learning space. The school previously estimated the project would cost more than HK$400 million; the Education Bureau has not provided a current cost forecast.
