The Executive Council has approved fare increases on Star Ferry’s Central–Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai–Tsim Sha Tsui routes, taking effect on 25 January 2027. The increase will be HK$0.60 to HK$1 per weekday trip and HK$1 to HK$1.80 at weekends.
For adults, weekday upper-deck fares will go from HK$5 to HK$6, while lower-deck fares will rise from HK$4 to HK$4.80. On weekends and public holidays, upper-deck fares will increase from HK$6.50 to HK$8.30 and lower-deck fares from HK$5.60 to HK$7.20.
The visitor ticket will rise by 20 per cent to HK$60. Star Ferry had asked to raise fares by HK$0.80 to HK$2 per trip. The government said it considered an increase justified but reduced the approved rises to take passengers’ needs into account.
A government spokesperson said Star Ferry recorded cumulative losses of more than HK$100 million between 2018 and 2023, linked in part to the Covid-19 pandemic, and relied on debt financing to sustain its services. The company made marginal profits in 2024 and 2025, but the government expects it to return to losses from 2026. It cited slow passenger growth, limited scope for cost cuts, rising operating costs and interest on debt as continuing pressures.
The monthly ticket price will remain HK$190.
