Primary One classes at Hong Kong’s state and aided primary schools are set to fall by about 125 to 126 in the 2026 school year compared with the previous year, according to media analyses of the 2026 Primary School Profiles published on September 1.
The figures vary slightly between the reports. Ming Pao said 121 schools would cut a combined 144 classes, while 17 schools would add 18, resulting in a net reduction of 126 classes. i-CABLE reported that 120 schools would cut 143 classes, giving a net reduction of 125.
The number of schools offering only one Primary One class is reported to rise from 47 in the previous school year to 61 in 2026, an increase of 14 schools, i-CABLE said.
Among the schools reducing classes, Ming Pao reported that 99 would cut one class and 21 would cut two. One aided school in Wong Tai Sin would reduce its Primary One classes from five to two, a cut of three classes.
The reports also differ over which district has recorded the largest reduction. Ming Pao identified Kwai Tsing, with 17 fewer classes, while i-CABLE said Tuen Mun and Eastern District had the largest reductions, with 13 fewer classes each. i-CABLE also reported that four schools in Tuen Mun had cut more than two classes.
The two reports used different totals for the number of state and aided primary schools, with Ming Pao citing 446 and i-CABLE citing 448. The supplied reports do not explain whether the discrepancies reflect different counting methods or updates to the data.
