School staff reported the incident to police at about 9am after seeing the student outside the building. Police officers, firefighters and negotiators attended and tried to persuade him to return to safety.

Ming Pao reported that firefighters deployed a rescue air cushion at ground level and stood by on the rooftop during the operation.

The reports differed over the exact location, describing it generally as an exterior ledge near an upper-floor or top-floor area. One account referred to a ledge outside a sixth-floor stairwell, while the other said the student was beyond a concrete parapet on an exterior wall ledge.

Star Headline identified the student as a Form 4 boy and reported that he may have been troubled by family problems and wanted to see his father. Those details appeared only in that report and were not independently corroborated. Firefighters helped the student return to safety at about 11.20am.
