A swimmer died after apparently drowning during the Peng Chau Challenge on October 1. Police received a report at 12.21pm after the swimmer was found unconscious off a beach on Peng Chau.
He was taken to a clinic on Peng Chau before a government helicopter transferred him to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital. He was later confirmed dead.
Online event information identifies Open Water Swim Series Hong Kong as the organiser. The event offered 5.5-kilometre, 3.4-kilometre and 1.7-kilometre courses, with starts scheduled for 9.15am and 10.45am.
Rescuers used an automated chest-compression device while attempting to revive the swimmer.
