A 67-year-old taxi driver died after being struck by a private car while checking a reported rear-tyre failure on Wan Po Road in Tseung Kwan O early on August 23, 2026. The collision was reported shortly after 5am near the Hong Kong Velodrome Park or Nan Fung Plaza area.
Reports said the taxi had stopped at the roadside after its rear tyre burst or went flat, and the driver got out to inspect it. A private car approaching from behind reportedly failed to stop in time, hitting the stationary taxi and the driver.
The driver was trapped in the crash and had to be freed by firefighters. Accounts differed on whether he was pinned between the two vehicles or beneath the private car. He suffered multiple serious injuries and was taken unconscious to Tseung Kwan O Hospital.
He was pronounced dead at 6.58am, according to reports by Star Headline and Ming Pao. Some reports identified the deceased by the surname Chan.
Police arrested the 35-year-old private-car driver on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death. The arrest is an allegation and does not establish guilt. The case was assigned to the Traffic Department’s Special Investigation Team in Kowloon East for further investigation.
