A 59-year-old taxi driver died after a three-vehicle collision on Cheung Tung Road near Sunny Bay in North Lantau at about 8pm on August 25, 2026. The crash involved a taxi, a Discovery Bay bus and a truck.
The taxi driver was found trapped and unconscious inside the vehicle and was freed by emergency personnel. He was taken to North Lantau Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Other people were injured and taken by ambulance to North Lantau Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital. Some reports put the number of injured at 11, while RTHK reported at least nine, so the final toll was unclear.
The taxi was severely damaged, including to its front and rear, while the bus windscreen was damaged. The reports did not provide a confirmed account of how the collision occurred.
The Transport Department said Cheung Tung Road near Sunny Bay was closed in both directions after the crash. Ming Pao reported that the airport-bound slow lane of the North Lantau Highway, which had earlier been closed, reopened at 9:44pm, while RTHK gave a conflicting account that the lane was closed because of the accident.
The cause of the collision had not been determined and remained under investigation.
