About 7.44 million passenger trips are expected through Hong Kong’s land, sea and air control points during the October 1–7 mainland National Day Golden Week, according to the Immigration Department. The figure counts trips, rather than unique visitors, and is likely to bring heavier demand for taxis.

The Transport Department and the Committee on Taxi Service Quality have urged drivers to provide courteous service, assist passengers who need help and follow the rules. Drivers have been reminded not to refuse passengers, take circuitous routes or overcharge. Police will strengthen enforcement against unlawful taxi practices during the holiday period.

The warning comes against the backdrop of the taxi-driver demerit-point system, which took effect on September 22, 2024. About 230 drivers had been given demerit points by September 29 in cases involving overcharging, refusing passengers and taking circuitous routes.

A driver who receives 15 or more points within any two-year period may be ordered by a magistrate to lose the qualification to drive a taxi. The first disqualification lasts three months, while subsequent disqualifications last six months.
