Firefighters rescued three kittens from an airwell inside a vacant ground-floor shop on Shanghai Street in Yau Ma Tei around midday on 10 October. The shop was locked, and staff from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Hong Kong) helped with the rescue.
The cat volunteer, who regularly fed and monitored cats in the area, told Ming Pao she had noticed a mother cat and three kittens missing several days earlier. She could not find the shop’s owner or get inside to check. On the morning of the rescue, she heard meowing from the premises and called for help.
The kittens had no visible injuries and received an initial health check. They were taken to a cattery for care, isolation and further examination.
