A 400mm saltwater pipe on Pui To Road burst on the afternoon of 15 October, sending muddy water across the road in its third failure this year. HK01 quoted a passer-by as saying: “Here we go again.”

The Water Supplies Department said repairs were complete and saltwater supply began gradually returning to normal from 11am on 16 October.

The same ageing section, about 300 metres long, also burst in May and July. The department had already included the pipe in its renewal programme and accelerated plans to replace it after those earlier failures.

The replacement is divided into three stages. Work beneath Deacon Chiu Park began on 2 October and was expected to finish before the second quarter of 2027. The second stage, replacing pipe beneath a road bridge, had also begun and was expected to take six months.

The final stage will replace pipe beneath the footpath and road opposite Tuen Mun Town Plaza Phase 2. A nearby busy junction means the work must accommodate traffic from different directions and will require traffic to be managed temporarily several times, making this stage more complex and longer.
