Trains departing Tung Chung for Hong Kong will begin using a newly built section between Tung Chung and Sunny Bay from the first train on 13 September 2026, MTR said. The change forms part of the Tung Chung Line extension works being carried out for the future Tung Chung East station.
The section, which connects with the future station, has completed construction and testing, as well as statutory compliance checks by government departments. MTR said the railway systems involved had also been confirmed to work together.
The overall journey time towards Hong Kong is expected to remain broadly similar after the change, while train frequencies will remain unchanged.
Before the section enters service, engineering teams carried out dynamic tests covering signalling and system integration outside normal operating hours. MTR said the tests did not affect daily Tung Chung Line operations.
After the rerouting, MTR will remove sections of the existing Hong Kong-bound track that are no longer needed for train operations. This will create space for new track serving trains towards Tung Chung.
The next phase will involve rerouting the Tung Chung-bound track. MTR plans to carry out the third and fourth turnout installation works in late 2026 and in 2027 respectively.
