Two defendants in an alleged airport-project bribery scheme were acquitted after a judge ruled that prosecutors had not proved their case beyond reasonable doubt.
The prosecution alleged that, from 2020 to 2022, the then general manager of Airport Authority Hong Kong conspired with the director of Goldwave Steel Structure Engineering Limited and a Hong Kong company’s general manager to help Goldwave secure a steel-platform subcontract for the Three-runway System at Hong Kong International Airport.
All three defendants denied one charge of conspiracy to have a public servant accept an advantage. In assessing the case against the two defendants who remained, the judge described a prosecution witness’s evidence as vague and evasive, and said the witness had withheld the truth. She found the testimony was not wholly truthful and acquitted the pair.
The court announced that the former Airport Authority Hong Kong manager had died before the ruling and declared his charge sheet legally ineffective. He did not receive a verdict on the merits.
