A 34-year-old man and a 16-year-old male hiker were injured by bee stings during a hike in the Sai Kung area on September 9 and taken to Tseung Kwan O Hospital by ambulance. The older man suffered injuries to his head, while the younger hiker was injured on his limbs, including his hands and feet.
The pair were part of a group of 11 that reportedly set out from the Monkey Tong Stream campsite at about 10.30am. The reports describe the group differently: one said it comprised three instructors and eight students, while the other said the hikers were led by a coach.
At about 1pm, the group reportedly encountered a swarm of bees during the hike. Reports said the bees may have been disturbed after someone accidentally struck or kicked a beehive, but this remains an unconfirmed suspicion rather than an established cause.
