Two men were injured after a person apparently lost balance or fell on an escalator in the Shek Lei area of Kwai Chung at about 4pm on August 23, causing people behind to fall as well, according to reports received by police. The 76-year-old man surnamed Song and the 68-year-old man surnamed Pan were taken to Princess Margaret Hospital and were reportedly conscious.
Reports differed on the exact location, placing the escalator at Shek Lei Shopping Centre, at Shek Lei Estate Market, or between the shopping centre and the market. They also differed on the total number of people involved, so it was unclear whether anyone besides the two injured men was affected.
Emergency personnel attended the scene, and Song was reportedly trapped for a time before being helped out. Reports described his injuries as abrasions to his limbs or an injury to his right hand, while Pan was reported to have suffered a hand abrasion.
The escalator was taken out of service after the accident, reportedly in both directions, while engineering or maintenance staff inspected it. No inspection result or reopening time was provided.
