Two suspected mobile illegal petrol stations were dismantled in the Kwai Chung area on the afternoon of August 24, with two men arrested and two vehicles seized, according to reports.
About 770 litres of untaxed petrol were seized in total. The reports put its estimated market value at about HK$25,000 and its dutiable value at about HK$4,700.
At a public open-air car park on Stonecutters Island, officers allegedly found a private car parked among other vehicles, with plastic storage containers and fuelling equipment beside it. A man was allegedly transferring petrol into the car. The reports said about 670 litres of untaxed petrol were seized in the search linked to the car park.
The arrested men were described as local residents aged 26 and 55. The younger man was suspected of operating the illegal filling station, while the older man was the private-car driver allegedly receiving the fuel. Officers later found another parked private car with a plastic container holding about 100 litres of untaxed petrol, along with storage and fuelling equipment.
The Customs and Excise Department and the Fire Services Department said illegal fuel activities in public car parks lacked compliant fire-safety equipment and installations, and could have serious consequences if an accident occurred. They appealed to the public not to use illegal filling stations.
