Police arrested two women on 23 October on suspicion of ill-treatment or neglect of a child or young person in care. They were reported to be the girl’s 61-year-old maternal grandmother and a 43-year-old Indonesian domestic helper. Both were being detained for investigation.

Police said the Social Welfare Department referred the case on 22 October, concerning an 11-year-old girl suspected of being treated inappropriately by family members. Her hands and feet were red and swollen. She was conscious when taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment, and was later transferred to Hong Kong Children's Hospital.

Online clips reportedly showed the girl asking for help from a room while a woman banged on the door.

HK01 listed the Social Welfare Department hotline (2343 2255), Against Child Abuse (2755 1122) and 999 for urgent violence, as well as 18281 for the TWGHs CEASE Crisis Centre and 2777 8899 for a youth crisis-support service.
