The Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions says the Civil Service Bureau has outlined preferential routes into other government jobs for postal workers affected by Hongkong Post’s move to two-year contracts, including priority consideration and relaxed education requirements.

The union said affected workers could transfer to assistant clerical officer posts, and that a general clerical assistant recruitment scheme would be opened to existing postal staff. One union representative said workers applying to another department would be exempt from screening and would not have to restart a three-year probation period.

Hongkong Post announced in mid-August that postal workers and postmen whose probation ended in September would receive two-year civil-service contracts instead of long-term employment terms. HK01 put the affected group at 200. The chairman of a government employees’ association questioned what would happen when the contracts ended, describing the arrangement as close to dismissal with two years’ notice.

The union said workers who transferred would not receive less than their existing postal salary.
