A 21-year-old man wanted in connection with Hong Kong International Airport’s alleged HK$7 million gold-bar robbery was arrested after the private car he was driving collided with another vehicle in the Tate’s Cairn Tunnel at about 3am on August 25, 2026. Police identified him as a wanted person while investigating the crash.
The tunnel was operating with two-way traffic in one tube when the collision occurred. The other vehicle’s driver, a 54-year-old man surnamed Lai, and his 37-year-old male passenger, surnamed Yu, were taken conscious to Prince of Wales Hospital with reported pain in various parts of their bodies.
Police reported finding about 66 grams of suspected cocaine, five suspected electronic-cigarette cartridges containing etomidate and suspected drug-use equipment in the vehicle and on the man. The reported total street value was about HK$70,000.
Ming Pao identified the suspect as surnamed Chan. Police believe he was involved in the alleged robbery at Car Park 3 of Hong Kong International Airport on June 18, when gold bars worth HK$7 million were reported stolen. The reports said 18 people had been arrested in connection with the robbery by the time of Chan’s arrest, but did not detail his alleged role.
Ming Pao reported that Chan would face six provisional charges: conspiracy to rob, trafficking in dangerous drugs, taking a conveyance without authority, driving without a licence, driving without third-party insurance and careless driving. The charges are provisional and do not establish guilt.
Chan suffered a leg injury, refused hospital treatment and was arrested at the scene. The case was assigned to the Wong Tai Sin district crime squad, and he was scheduled to appear at Kowloon City Magistrates’ Courts on the morning of August 26.
