A male officer from the West Kowloon Regional Emergency Unit was loading ammunition into his service firearm when it discharged one round at the unit’s base at about 11pm on August 25, police reports said. No one was injured.

Reports identified the location variously as the unit’s operational base, a police base in Mong Kok or a base inside Mong Kok Police Station. One report put the incident at 11.01pm, while others said it happened at about 11pm.

Police said the force has strict regulations governing the use of its equipment. The West Kowloon Regional Emergency Unit is handling the case. The reports did not state what caused the discharge, where the round went or whether any property was damaged.
