A woman died after falling from the exterior ledge of Ching Choi House at Tin Ching Estate in Tin Shui Wai at about 3pm on August 29, following a stand-off with rescuers lasting roughly five hours.
Firefighters deployed an inflatable rescue cushion or life-saving airbag on the ground, while police negotiators tried to persuade her to move to safety. She was later pronounced dead at the scene, with reports differing on whether rescuers or ambulance personnel confirmed the death.
Police and firefighters were called to the estate during the morning after the woman was found sitting on the exterior ledge. Ming Pao reported that police received the call at about 10am, while Star Headline gave the time as 10.29am.
Reports also differed over the woman’s age, with Ming Pao describing her as about 30 and Star Headline reporting that she was 39. The exact circumstances of the fall and the cause of the incident remain under investigation.
The reports described the incident as a suspected jumping or self-harm case, but no motive has been confirmed. Star Headline reported that police found no suicide note at the scene.
