A woman around 30 lost more than HK$2.1 million after meeting a man on a dating app who claimed to be from Taiwan, police said in an account published on CyberDefender.
After gaining her trust, the man introduced a fake website selling AI computing power. He claimed she could use it to make short videos, upload them to a separate fake platform and earn commissions. Following instructions from fake customer service, she made repeated transfers to a personal bank account to buy the computing power.
The video platform later showed more than HK$300,000 in apparent accumulated profits. When she tried to withdraw, customer service demanded a 20% handling fee and refused to release the money. The man then disappeared, and she realised she had been scammed.
Police warned that paid tasks proposed by an online acquaintance the user has never met are high-risk. They also advised people not to transfer money to personal bank accounts, saying legitimate platforms would not ask users to send funds to such accounts.
