Police said a foreign woman lost more than HK$2 million within a few days after responding to a Facebook advert offering high commissions for online hotel-booking tasks.
After she replied, the scammers contacted her on WhatsApp and sent her to a fake booking site. Following its customer service instructions, she made repeated transfers to different personal bank accounts to book hotels. The site displayed commissions, but she could not withdraw money.
After discussing the problem with her family, she called anti-scam hotline 18222 to consult the Anti-Deception Coordination Centre and realised she had been scammed.
Police warned that online order-boosting work is often a scam and advised people not to click unknown investment-site links or transfer money to unknown personal bank or Faster Payment System accounts. Anyone in doubt can call 18222.
