A large stone and its supporting seat in Alicja Kwade’s public-art installation Waiting Pavilions were found overturned and separated near the D14 entrance to Tai Kwun’s Prison Yard on 20 September.
A Tai Kwun security manager surnamed Lam reported the suspected damage to police at about 11am. Officers attended, cordoned off the affected artwork and reviewed CCTV footage.
Ming Pao reported that police were handling the case as criminal damage and that no arrest had been made at the time of its account.
Waiting Pavilions comprises stones supported by seats distributed around the Prison Yard. The site-specific installation draws on the former prison site and explores the passage of time. Star Headline reported that the work was valued at €70,500, or about HK$593,000.
Star Headline reported that the affected component was allegedly rocked violently before the stone and support overturned, separated and became damaged. The newspaper also said police were seeking a foreign man dressed in black in connection with the suspected damage.
