A video labelled “D1 Disco night” has circulated online and appears to be from an orientation camp at City University of Hong Kong, although the event’s identity has not been independently confirmed.
The footage shows a shirtless male student lifting a woman wearing underwear during a party, while several people stand nearby watching and cheering.
CityU said on September 2 that it was highly concerned about what it described as serious organisational failures and inappropriate conduct at an orientation camp organised by a student group. It also said participating students had been subjected to unnecessary disturbance.
The university has immediately formed a disciplinary investigation committee. It is meeting the organisers and collecting information from some participants, and said disciplinary action would be taken according to the seriousness of the findings.
CityU said it has zero tolerance for inappropriate conduct and requires students to follow its code of conduct and guidelines for campus activities. The student organisation involved must also complete designated training, including training on preventing sexual harassment on campus.
The university said orientation activities are intended to help new students understand and adapt to university life. It said conduct that departs from that purpose, harms students’ dignity or damages campus culture would not be tolerated. The investigation remains under way and no final disciplinary outcome has been announced.
