A diagonal pedestrian crossing is now operating at the junction of On Ming Street and On Muk Street in Sha Tin, close to Shek Mun MTR Station and Shek Mun Shopping Centre. It allows pedestrians to cross the intersection in one movement, reaching the opposite corner without walking around the junction in stages.
The Transport Department says the arrangement is designed to shorten walking distances and save time. On average, diagonal crossings are expected to reduce walking distance and crossing time by about 30 per cent compared with conventional right-angle crossings.
The new layout also includes dropped kerbs for elderly people, wheelchair users and people with handcarts. Traffic bollards have been installed to remind motorists to drive carefully as pedestrians move across the junction.
The junction previously had three pedestrian-light groups. The new installation adds one diagonal pedestrian-light group, unlike the cross-diagonal design used at earlier trial locations.
The Transport Department describes the Sha Tin crossing as Hong Kong’s third. It follows trials launched in 2024 at Sha Kok Street and Yat Tai Street in Sha Tin, and at Carnarvon Road and Granville Road in Tsim Sha Tsui. The department said the two trial crossings had operated safely and smoothly.
The crossing is part of a wider proposed expansion under the Transport Strategy Blueprint announced in February 2026. The department plans to commission diagonal crossings at 15 additional junctions in batches during the second half of 2026.
