DJ Mao was admitted to intensive care after becoming seriously unwell at a private event in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Her manager told HK01 that she had finished a DJ engagement in Wan Chai before going to a private venue in Tsim Sha Tsui to perform. The manager said Mao lost a dice game and was given a drink as a penalty. She thought it was whisky; after tasting it, her manager thought it was a cocktail. A timeline of the night places her at a Mody Road venue at about 1.30am on Nov. 1, after work, and says she drank three whiskies in two rounds. At about 3.30am, an unidentified man offered her what appeared to be orange juice; she became disoriented after drinking it. The manager said she continued performing, then collapsed and began convulsing, unable to move.

Her manager said Mao had regained consciousness by the morning of Nov. 1 but remained in intensive care. He said hospital toxicology tests showed positive results for cocaine, ecstasy and two other drugs known as “Five” and “Happy water”.

Police said they received a report at 4.57am on Nov. 1 from a male DJ, who said his 33-year-old colleague had felt unwell after drinking at a venue on Mody Road and might have been given an unknown drug. Police classified the case as suspected administration of poison with intent to cause harm. No one had been arrested as of Nov. 1.
