A 59-year-old man has been taken to a police station after a car was filmed overtaking into oncoming traffic and crossing a zebra crossing the wrong way in Kai Tak, passing close to pedestrians.
Police said the incident happened at about 6pm on 14 September, when a private car travelling along Muk Chui Street suddenly moved into the opposite traffic lane to overtake. It then drove across the zebra crossing in the wrong direction.
Pedestrians were still crossing at the time, and the vehicle came close to them, posing a serious threat to other road users, police said. Nobody was injured.
The incident came to police attention after dashcam footage circulated online. Following an investigation, officers took the local driver to a police station on 16 September to assist with inquiries into suspected dangerous driving, police said. He will subsequently be ticketed for the suspected offence.
Police described dangerous driving as a serious traffic offence under the Road Traffic Ordinance. The maximum penalties are a HK$25,000 fine, three years’ imprisonment and disqualification from driving for at least six months.
