The Department of Justice launched a scheme on November 3 to help eligible small and medium-sized law firms and barristers pay for legal technology. It reimburses up to HK$20,000 towards a one-year subscription to designated services.
The scheme’s list includes services from 14 providers in Hong Kong, mainland China and overseas. They cover legal research, document drafting, workflow management and hearing support.
Eligible applicants include sole practitioners, Hong Kong law firms with five or fewer partners, and barristers with no more than seven years’ call.
Deputy Secretary for Justice Horace Cheung said the Department would issue guidance with principles and practical advice on using legal technology and managing its risks. He said such tools should assist, not replace, professional judgment, and that lawyers remain responsible for their professional duties when using third-party products.
Applications are open through the Law Society of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Bar Association, which handle the application and funding process. The deadline is January 29, 2027.
