A joint operation on 8 September cleared accumulated waste from a dead-end lane on Shando Street, Shek Tong Tsui, the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) said. Different departments handled the waste according to their respective responsibilities, Ming Pao reported.
The lane contained household rubbish alongside construction waste and other materials. That mix meant the problem could not be dealt with solely through routine removal of household waste, and required coordination across different areas of responsibility, according to the FEHD account reported by Star Headline and Ming Pao.
FEHD said it first identified the accumulation during an inspection in June and carried out 17 cleaning operations during its follow-up. Those operations mainly removed household rubbish, while a cleansing-services contractor attended at least once a week.
The department said it received a complaint about the location through the 1823 hotline on 3 September. It then followed up again and continued coordinating the handling of the construction waste and other materials before the joint clearance.
During the clearance, rodent traces were found in a nearby building, Ming Pao reported. FEHD said a notice to eliminate pests and rodents was issued to the building’s management office.
FEHD said the waste at the site had been cleared and that it would continue monitoring the situation and working with relevant departments. Further reports about the location can be made through the 1823 hotline.
