The Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) is presenting a free public exhibition celebrating Leslie Cheung’s artistic achievements and the golden era of Hong Kong popular culture. The exhibition, titled “The Elegance of 70 · Design Resonance: A Leslie Cheung Memorial Exhibition”, is scheduled to run until 15 November 2026.
The exhibition focuses on Cheung’s artistic legacy and features three main areas: collection photographs being shown publicly for the first time, an immersive interactive experience combining classic exhibits with aesthetic elements, and design work by HKDI students alongside a limited-edition commemorative vinyl record.
The photographs were supplied by Hong Kong photographers Fanco Lai, Jonny Koo, Lewis Ho and Sam Wong, as well as South Korean photographer Hyung S. Kim. The collection includes instant photographs, negatives and classic prints taken during the 1980s and 1990s.
Ming Pao reported that the exhibition includes photo opportunities such as a recreated darkroom setting. It also displays the silver microphone stand associated with Cheung’s “Final Encounter of the Legend” farewell concert.
Student work comes from HKDI’s communication design, digital media, and fashion and image design disciplines. The exhibits include cover designs and sculptures, while the commemorative vinyl record has a limited run of 500 copies.
The reported opening date remains unclear. Star Headline said the exhibition opened on 11 September and reported that it was co-organised by HKDI and the Hong Kong Professional Photographers Association. Ming Pao, however, said it would begin on 12 September and did not identify the association as a co-organiser.
The exhibition is free to visit and is reported by both outlets to continue until 15 November 2026. Its exact public opening date and the Hong Kong Professional Photographers Association’s formal role require confirmation.
