Hong Kong’s gold central clearing and settlement system is scheduled to begin operating in the first quarter of 2027, chief executive John Lee Ka-chiu said.

The first phase of a physical connection between Hong Kong’s precious-metals clearing system and Shanghai’s gold exchange started in 2026.

Lee made the remarks at a meeting with Shanghai mayor Zhu Zhongming on November 6, during a visit to Shanghai for an import expo. He said Hong Kong would strengthen its role as a global offshore renminbi business hub and deepen cooperation with Shanghai to promote the currency’s internationalisation.

Lee also said he hoped to strengthen cooperation with mainland exchanges, including Shanghai’s gold and futures exchanges, to attract international investors and build a globally competitive gold-trading ecosystem.
