The flight was travelling from Hong Kong to London on July 4, 2026, when it temporarily lost contact with air traffic control over Romania.
Cathay’s investigation said the aircraft’s communications equipment was functioning normally. It found that crew members mistakenly responded to an air traffic control instruction intended for another flight, then tuned the radio to an incorrect frequency and failed to notice that communications had been interrupted.
