Hong Kong will take a stricter approach to tour groups that force visitors to shop during the 2026 National Day holiday period, Chief Executive John Lee said, warning that the practice damages the city’s tourism reputation.
Lee said authorities would act against travel agencies and guides that broke the rules, including cancelling a guide’s registration. Registered shops involved would also face action under the law. The measures are planned enforcement, rather than evidence of completed sanctions.
The holiday preparations will include cross-department coordination and information for visitors about weather, transport arrangements, activities and conditions at border-control points. An incident monitoring and support centre is also due to operate during the holiday period.
At a site in Sai Kung where a reservation system is being trialled, Lee said the first week had run smoothly and expected visitor numbers to increase during the holiday. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department is due to send additional staff to assist visitors and remind them to maintain environmental hygiene.
