Chief Executive John Lee urged global university leaders to take part in developing the Northern Metropolis and outlined a vision for its planned university towns at the Global University Presidents and Leaders Summit.

The towns—San Tin, Hung Shui Kiu and Ta Kwu Ling—would each have a distinct focus and be designed to attract leading scholars and students, Lee said. The government would invite universities and other institutions to establish research institutes and large shared research platforms there.

Examples Lee gave included a high-performance computing centre, joint laboratories and interdisciplinary research centres. He also said the government would encourage university staff to conduct research at companies and encourage industry professionals to contribute to university teaching and research.
