鄭雋熹 was remanded in custody while seven other defendants were granted bail after the latest hearing in the JPEX case on 17 September. The eight appeared at a Hong Kong magistrates' court identified in the reports as 東區裁判法院.
The defendants face 33 charges linked to alleged conspiracy to defraud, money laundering and fraudulently or recklessly inducing people to invest in virtual assets. Ming Pao reported that the prosecution alleges investors were told JPEX held operating licences in several places or that they could earn returns.
鄭雋熹 and 林作 each face fraud charges, while five defendants face the virtual-asset offence. The defendants are 鄭雋熹, 蕭穎謙, 林作, 陳穎怡, 區焯基, 趙敬賢, 梁綺湘 and 何紀雯. Ming Pao described 鄭雋熹 as an entertainer, 林作 as an online influencer, and 區焯基 and 趙敬賢 as executives of 賣幣袋鼠 (Coingaroo).
Star Headline reported the alleged amount involved as about HK$110 million. Ming Pao separately reported that four defendants faced 21 money-laundering charges involving more than HK$112 million, while 鄭雋熹 faced four further money-laundering charges involving HK$18.47 million.
Ming Pao also reported that 26 people had been charged by police in the wider investigation since JPEX was accused of involvement in fraud in 2023. The case is due back in court on 14 December.
