A reported fire or smoke incident in a meter room at Oi Man Estate left parts of the estate without electricity and disrupted water supplies on Sunday night. Firefighters extinguished the fire and no injuries were reported.
At about 8pm, a security guard reported smoke coming from a meter room and firefighters attended. i-CABLE News reported that the meter room in Po Man House had caught fire and that the blaze was quickly put out. Police, firefighters and the power company also sent personnel to investigate.
The outage affected Po Man House and Kar Man House. By about 11pm, some buildings had still not fully regained electricity. Residents told Star Headline that they had heard an explosion, while many flats were dark even though corridor lights remained on. Large numbers of residents went downstairs or to open areas to shelter and keep cool.
The loss of electricity also disrupted water supplies. The Water Supplies Department sent a tanker to the estate so affected residents could collect water for emergency use, with community-assistance personnel also reported to be helping on site.
The cause of the incident remained under investigation.
